How to Install a Single User Softkey

This article explains how to activate a new Single-User Softkey on your machine.

For installing and activating a network softkey on a server instead, see How to Install the Network License Version of OpticStudio instead

You must be connected to the internet to complete the installation and activation. If your machine is not connected to the internet, you need to follow these instructions instead to activate your softkey.

Installation and Troubleshooting

NOTE:  Before continuing this article, you should be certain that you have a softkey license.  If you received a physical USB dongle from Zemax, you do not own a softkey license.

Activating the Single User Softkey

Before beginning, verify all the following.

  • You must be connected to the internet to complete the installation and activation. If your machine is not connected to the internet, you need to follow these instructions instead to activate your softkey.
  • You must have OpticStudio installed on the same machine you will be activating. For details on the OpticStudio installation process, please see this article.
  • Important: You must not activate a softkey license on a machine using Windows in an Apple Bootcamp (dual boot) environment, as the softkeys are not compatible. You can use Parallels or other virtualization software like Vmware. See How to Protect and Prevent Loss of your Softkey License for details on alternatives for Apple computers.

1 - Launch OpticStudio. If you do not have an existing license, the Zemax License Manager will automatically open for you to add your license information. Otherwise, you may open the Zemax LIcense Manager from the WIndows Start menu.

2. Select the “New key” tab along the left.

3. Type in your softkey activation code, which was provided to you by the Zemax sales team, and click "Apply License" to activate it.

TIP: If you have installed an OpticStudio release older than 16.5, or your Zemax License Manager is dated before August 2016, the activation process is different. On the "New key" Tab, click "Activate", type the softkey activation code into the popup window and click "ok".

4. You should get a message of success. If the activation generates an error message, first try restarting your computer and try again. If you still have troubles, refer to How to Troubleshoot Softkey License Issues.

5.  Open the License Information tab. You should then see your softkey information. Verify that it shows the correct product (Standard, Premium or Professional) and expiration date.

6. Now that your new license is activated on your machine, this is a good time to read How to Protect and Prevent Loss of your Softkey License. It gives details on how softkey licenses are locked to the machine, tips to avoid losing it, backing it up, our policy on lost keys, and optional lost license insurance (ZPA), which can help avoid having to purchasing a replacement in case of computer failure or theft.

Using a specific license

If you have more than one Zemax license installed on your machine or available in your organization, you can choose which license to use by choosing the “Set as default” option.  All softkey, red, and green keys will appear listed in the License Information tab. If you have a black USB key for Zemax plugged into your machine, it will be displayed at the bottom of the Zemax License Manager below the "Use black USB key" checkbox.

If you also have a Black USB key, you can choose to use it instead of the softkeys. To do so, just click on the “Use Black USB key” at the bottom of the License Information tab.
